Young agrees United terms
Ashley Young has agreed personal terms ahead of his proposed move to Manchester United from Aston Villa.
The talented midfielder, who has also undergone a brief medical, is now expected to complete a switch to Old Trafford when he returns from holiday.
It emerged on Thursday that the Premier League champions had held discussions with Young's representatives over a possible switch to Old Trafford.
The England international admitted earlier this summer that he was keen to play at the very highest level, sparking speculation that he would leave Villa Park this summer.
United have been credited with a long-term interest in the former Watford player, while Liverpool were also understood to be monitoring the situation.
And Sir Alex Ferguson now looks to have pipped the Reds to yet another transfer target, with Blackburn defender Phil Jones already on course to join the 19-times champions of England.

I was against this signing last summer as can be seen from my earlier post, but I'm glad we've got him now. The last ten months have shown that Obertan is unlikely to become a United regular, and with the injury to Valencia and the absence of Park, we looked weak in the wide areas, especially now that Giggs plays a more central role. Young will not only add good competition for the wide areas, but he's also well suited to playing in either a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3, and either out wide or centrally, and it is that variety that will have drawn Fergie to him. I still think we need a central midfielder of high quality, especially now that Hargreaves and Scholes have left. I'm still not sure whether Anderson is the real deal, and Cleverley is still unproven at the highest level so a good centre-mid would complete what has been a very good summer so far; the imminent arrival of David De Gea alongside Young and Phil Jones make me optimistic for next season.

Some interesting stats going around re Young, now that's he's signed for us. Here's one I got off Twitter... "Ashley Young is 7th on the PL assist rate list with 0.46 assists per game, behind Giggs, Bergkamp, Cantona, Fabregas, Henry & Beckham." Not a bad set of names there!

As expected deal done. 5 year deal, fee around the £15m mark. Great piece of business, lets hope it turn out to be a great deal on the pitch.

If he can add more goals to his game i think he'll turn out to be a quality addition to the team. And I think under Ferguson he could do just that and get even better as Oli has already said.

He'd be way overpriced, and for me he's no better than what we've got. Pass.

Ashley Young? No thanks. We need to give Valencia and Nani the chance to grow into top quality players, which they are both capable of. Obertan has shown promise as well, and Park can do an excellent job on the flanks too. Plus there is even the opportunity to play Rafael and Fabio in more advanced roles. I think we would benefit from a Hargreaves type holding midfielder, but it will all be down to whether Carrick can re-capture his form. I'd like to see him and Fletcher given a solid run in midfield with a more advanced player just ahead of them, someone like Scholes, or dare I say it, Ozil?

I've always been a big Carrick fan. Bar a slightly slow start when he first signed for us, for the first three seasons he was outstanding and even early last season he was playing okay, but since the spell where he and Fletcher were covering in defence he lost his way entirely. But he's only 29 and I'm still hopeful he'll rediscover his past form, because there's been no physical deterioration and he's a class act, an excellent passer and reader of the game. Even a couple of his goals last year (Everton/Wolfsburg/City at OT) showed how well he can caress a football.

I think people have completely forgotten what Michael Carrick is capable of due to the poor showing of his last season... During 2007-2008, he was actually very very effective and played a huge role in our double success. Likewise the year before that too.. Thing with Carrick is, he isn't a DM who perhaps gets stuck in a lot, or goes in hard like a Keano slide tackling and all that....but his reading of the game is very very under-rated.... Especially against sides who we need to sit back against, Carrick is fantastic at playing the containing game and intercepting passes, it just doesn't get noticed as much as he has fantastic positioning, but perhaps not that engine or drive that someone like Hargreaves or Vieira had.. Fletcher is fantastic as a box to box player for me, and Carrick despite whatever happened last season, I have a lot of faith in in that deep lying central midfielder role.....we have seen him ping cross field balls to the flanks and long through balls as well..(obviously not with the conviction, consistency and pace of Scholes's passing)... God knows what was up with him last season though, but I still really rate him highly..

Good player, but the price is crazy and i'd rather we looked for a defensive minded midfield player.
