Fergie confident on Scholes deal
Sir Alex Ferguson has called for Paul Scholes to commit to another year at Manchester United.
The midfielder is reportedly dubious about the type of impact he can still have at the club he has played for since 1994.
The 36-year-old has seen both Edwin Van Der Sar and Gary Neville announce their retirement this year, while Ryan Giggs has opted to sign a new one-year deal at Old Trafford.
The current injury list at the club means that Scholes will likely start in the Stade Velodrome on Wednesday night as United take on Marseille in the UEFA Champions League knock-out stages.
Ferguson believes that the midfield general still has a key role to play for his side, even if it means re-evaluating his role.
"I am more than hopeful about Paul signing another contract," said Ferguson.
"I think he should. His fitness isn't in question. I think Paul feels he has to play all the games.
"It is not a bad thing to be that way but at his age, that is impossible. But he can still play a big part for Manchester United, this season and next."
The veteran manager is relishing a hectic period of fixtures, games that will no doubt decide the course of United's season.
Despite a lengthy injury list that includes the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Anderson, Ryan Giggs and Antonio Valencia, Ferguson is optimistic about his side's chances.
"We have an important few weeks coming, there is no question about that," he added.
"We are just starting four away games on the run, which is a great challenge for us.
"They are all fantastic matches but it is a time we should enjoy. They are big games and in that situation, the players don't let us down often."

Just seeing the assurance the brought to the team last night shows how desperately we still need him. His legs aren't what they were and i cant see him playing in a 2 man midfield very often, but he's still our classiest midfielder by miles and could easily play on for another year in a 3 man midfield.

Even if it's just a year of playing sourcerer to the apprentice Cleverley I'll take that.

Great news if he does sign another one year extension as he still has loads to offer the team. Obviously he can't play every game but he still shows that he's got the class and experience in midfield to find space and create things. Here's hoping that he signs another contract which will give us another year to find a suitable replacement.
