Evans admits frustrations

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans admits he has been frustrated with his form during the past six months.

The 22-year-old centre-half put in a solid display against Rangers on Wednesday night in the UEFA Champions League, after some shaky performances of late.

It was a step towards his best form which last season saw him as the Red Devils' third choice centre-back behind Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

"I don't know why I wasn't performing well earlier in the season," said the Northern Ireland international.

"Last year I had a stop-start time and got one or two injuries when I was in the side.

"I wasn't at my best for about six months. I was making decisions and thinking 'I would never have done that in the past'.

"I have tried not to worry about it too much. I just got on with it and hoped everything would come back."

United have not conceded a goal in the Champions League this season and will look to make it six successive clean sheets in Europe when they host Valencia on Matchday Six.

Evans believes that the backing of manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been crucial in keeping his spirits up, even when he fell down in the pecking order behind new recruit Chris Smalling.

"I haven't been thinking of it as a chance to re-establish myself because the manager has always had faith in me, which is important," he added.

"It is just a case of getting my own personal confidence back."

United have the chance to go top of the Premier League table when they take on Blackburn at Old Trafford on Saturday.
