Scholes settles for three-goal show

Paul Scholes felt Manchester United could have scored more but was content with the 3-0 opening Premier League win over Newcastle.

The veteran shone in midfield as goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs, the first and third of which were created by the 35-year-old, made it a comfortable night for United.

"The most important thing is to win the game," Scholes told Sky Sports 1. "Maybe we could have scored more but we'll take a 3-0 win on the first day of the season.

"Newcastle came, set their stall out and defended deep. Once we got the goal we were a constant threat.

"A lot of teams come here and try to make it difficult. We just had to tire them out as much as we could.

"Second half especially, I really enjoyed that: creating chances, looking like we were going to score whenever we went forward."

On Giggs' strike, which the Welshman finished following a fine team move, he added: "It was a great goal to watch. We kept the ball well and it was a fantastic goal to start off with."

Maybe I am speaking too soon, but something tells me this is the season where Berbatov proves his doubters wrong...

The good news is that we found it so easy. We often struggle on the opening day- I remember a scrappy win against West Brom a few years back etc. I agree that Nani/ Evra together were great. But in some ways it is more pleasing that we won so easily without key attacking players such as Rooney and Valencia being involved - as those players can only get better. We need a team where different players can perform in diff games rather than always relying on Rooney. Last night was Scholes, Berbatov and Nani, next week it could be Rooney and Valencia. That's a good sign - a team where a goal can come from different places.

Scholes was MOTM for me, he just seems to be going from strength to strength at the moment. Pleased with the performance overall although we did let them get a couple of dangerous crosses in.

That Bulgarian's my Man of the Match. More of the same this season, please!

Very satisfied with our game so far, 2-0 up at H/T. Berbatov looks confident and is getting more involved with the game when the team doesn't have the ball as well - I just hope this is what we get from him for the rest of the season. We're still giving away the ball carelessly at times, though. I can't wait to see Hernandez!

Id go for the same line up as birchy. Im really not sure how this one will go, i can see it being a bit of a grind but if we get going and play well we could put 3 or 4 past them. Il go for us 2-1.

Same here mate, it will be a tough game tonight but I reckon he'll be making a scoring debut if we get him on when the barcodes are having to attack an some space opens up.
